We are desperate to build a new shelter on behalf of the many homeless animals of Eastern Washington State!

The Whitman County Humane Society is located in a small college town of about 15,000 permanent residents called Pullman in Eastern Washington State. Perhaps because of the transitory population of the university and our more rural setting, the attitude towards pets around here can be a bit casual. Whatever the cause, we seem to have more than our fair share of homeless animals.

Before 2000, our shelter was run by city government as a “kill” facility, and animals who found themselves there for more than two weeks were euthanized. Since then, a group of concerned residents have banded together to take over operation of the facility, turning it into a “no-kill” shelter, and running it as a non-profit organization and Humane Society.

Despite this dramatic shift in function and philosophy, we continue to rely on the original shelter structure to house our animals. Designed as a temporary holding facility, it is a pathetic 800 square feet. In that small space, we feed, treat, and care for an animal population that frequently swells to 70 strong. We have 10 holding kennels for isolating sick cats, and 14 concrete-floored enclosures for the dogs. We rely on an old school bus to house healthy cats. The shelter also consists of a single counter top area for dispensing medications and preparing meals, a washer and dryer, a small desk and file cabinet for keeping track of new residents and adoptions, and a tiny bathroom for our two full-time staff members and the many volunteers who care for the animals.

It’s hard to express in words the inadequacy of this space, and what a challenge it is to provide “humane” treatment under these conditions.

The board of directors and the concerned population of Whitman County are doing everything they can to change this situation. Land to build a new shelter has been donated, and we’ve had building plans drawn by an architect. We’ve even successfully completed the lengthy process of having them approved by city and county governing bodies. Through our fundraising efforts, memberships, and the generous donation of one noble animal lover who left her estate to the WCHS, we’ve managed to raise just over half a million dollars. But it is simply not enough.

Soon we can begin to build, but we only have about half of what we need!

Please help us win the rest!

The best that they can do

posted 5 years ago

This is a small shelter with not much selection, this however is not their fault I am sure that they are doing the best that they can with the funding in that area. It seem odd with the school of veternain science there that it was have a higher priority.

Pros: Close to town

Cons: very small
