The Rolla Animal Shelter was originally built in the 1970's. At that time there was only a 10 ft by 10 ft wooden shed with 6 indoor/outdoor dog runs. In the 1980's a concrete block building (30 ft x 40 ft) was added, which housed our cat room, reception area, two offices, bathroom, and an area in which to bath animals - it doubles as an overflow area. In 1999, a metal roof was added to cover outside kennels for our dogs and the wooden shed was made into a puppy/laundry room (it only has 4 kennels). This means that in the summer - with tempatures that have reached over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and in the winter - with tempatures that have gone as low as -10 degrees Fahrenheit, our dogs/puppies and workers suffer. We only have 23 outside dog kennels - which includes 5 quarantine dog kennels for sick dogs/puppies. We only have 16 cat cages - with no quarantine area for the cats/kittens. Our overflow area has 4 cages that we can use of the old type (which are not as safe)- the rest are in such bad shape that we are unable to use them for animals. We take in over 200 animals every month and, due to a lack of space, we have to turn away animals who really need our help. We take in 2500 calls per year- we do not only take care of the animals, we are also law enforcement. Our calls range from the simple - for example a dog running free, to ones like a bear cub up a tree. We have 3 officers and our shelter is open 7 days a week - with adoption hours everyday. We have an adoption rate of 60 %. However, with the shortage of space and the sheer numbers of animals which desperately need our help, we are forced to euthanize some of the animals entrusted to our care. This is something that no one that works here wants to do - it is something that we are forced to do. We also get calls, not just from our city and county - but from the surounding counties as well, since they do not have shelters of their own. We are in desperate need of a Zoo Too shelter makeover. As an Animal Control Officer at the Rolla Animal Shelter, I see hundreds of animals abandoned, droped off or just not wanted. So many times I have to turn away animals for lack of space. We have even started a "Waiting List" in hopes to buy time for a cat or dog that deserves a good home. Isn't that what it is all about? Finding a GOOD HOME. My job is not only to protect the animals, but public safty. There are times I have to bring dangerous animals to the shelter for safe keeping which takes up room from an animal that needs to be in our care for placement. I love my job and I love the public and animals I serve
Pros: We care for the placement of every animal
Cons: We don't have enough room
