Adoptions are on a first come, first serve basis. The shelter will not hold animals.

The adoption fee for both dogs and cats is $50.00. All of the following services are included in the fee:

* Physical examination provided by shelter veterinarian

* First series of vaccinations
For dogs, this includes: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo, Parainfluenza, Bordetella
For cats, this includes: Rhinotracheitis, Calici Virus, Panleukopenia, Chlamydia

* Blood testing
All dogs 6 months and older are tested for heartworms.
All cats are tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).

* De-worming
All dogs and cats have a fecal done and are administered their first deworming for the appropriate internal parasites.

* Additional treatments
Any animal found with ear mites are treated once at the shelter.
Animals with fleas and/or ticks are bathed and dipped or flea sprayed.

* Microchipping
The shelter will implant an AVID FriendChip into all adopted animals. An AVID FriendChip is a very small microchip, approximately the size of a grain of rice, that contains a one-of-a-kind identification number and is implanted safely into your pet just under its skin. It is then your responsibility to register your pet's identification number with the PETtrac national database. If you then lose your pet and it is taken to a participating animal shelter or veterinarian, your pet can easily be identified and you will be notified. Over 17,000 pet scanners have already been distributed and are helping to reunite lost pets with their owners every day.

Note: The Jefferson City Animal Shelter will only microchip pets that have been adopted from the shelter. Please contact your

veterinarian to have your existing pets microchipped.

* Spaying/Neutering
A voucher will be given at the time of adoption for spaying/neutering to be performed by participating veterinarians. It is mandatory that all dogs and cats adopted from the Jefferson City Animal Shelter are spayed or neutered, or a $500.00 fine with be imposed upon any new owner who fails to comply with this ordinance.

* Rabies vaccination
A voucher for a rabies vaccination will be given to you on the day of the adoption. The vaccination will be done by a participating veterinarian on our contract list.

Note: The following services are not included in the adoption fee: vaccination boosters, second de-wormings, additional ear mite treatments and heartworm preventative treatments.

Jefferson City Animal Shelter

I always enjoy coming in to pet the animals. My husband's family has adopted a dog from the shelter, he's great and very healthy.

Pros: Always have healthy happy animals

Cons: Need more space

Nice rooms for kittens

posted 6 years ago

This shelter has small rooms with glass windows looking in where small groups of kittens can be housed. You can go in and interact with them and it's really nice. I have gotten two kittens there over the years. They have cats in those rooms in the winter (not kitten season) but otherwise they have just a few cages for cats. Everyone has been very friendly when I've been there. They adopt out animals that are not spayed and neutered, with a certificate you can use for surgery later. I think this is a big mistake.

Pros: Good display for kittens

Cons: Animals adopted out that are not spayed/neutered
