Cat Guardians, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to
help with the feline overpopulation and homelessness problem in
DuPage County, Illinois. Cat Guardians provides proper medical
and sustenance needs and loving care to these stray and unwanted
cats. We make sure that every cat is neutered and therefore
unable to produce any unwanted cats.

The shelter was opened by director Kathy Blackwell in a two-story white clapboard house near the corner of St. Charles and Westmore Rd. in Lombard, Illinois. The shelter began as a rescue operation for a Wood Dale friend who died and left twelve pet cats. It was not that long before Kathy found twenty more strays and unwanteds and soon had dedicated herself full-time to the business of caring for, and seeking loving homes for, these cats.

Since then, Cat Guardians has seen over 1000 cats adopted from the shelter, where they have been nursed back to health or at least avoided the need to scavenge garbage or prowl for prey in the wilds of suburban Chicago. Cat Guardians does not employ euthanasia, except in extreme circumstances in which medical conditions are such that prolonging a cat's life would no longer be humane. Due to its no-kill policy, and as one of the smallest animal shelters in the Chicago area, Cat Guardians is usually filled to its legal capacity of feline residents. Today, some 50 cats and a rotating population of kittens reside in the basement of the Cat Guardians shelter. Although some cats and kittens are caged for their protection (due to illness, skittishness, aggression or their young age), most roam freely, having the freedom to play or nap in their choice spots. Fights do not usually occur, except for the occasional "turf battle," but the older, larger cats aren't often challenged.

Some of the cats, adorable though they are, have not been adopted or are considered unadoptable due to their advanced age or chronic medical problems. These cats are assured of a loving, permanent home at Cat Guardians.

The daily activities of the shelter—feeding the cats, administering medication, cleaning the litter boxes and the shelter, are performed with the help of volunteers. The shelter is currently in great need of additional volunteers. If you have an interest in helping out, please e-mail us (info@catguardians.org) or stop by during shelter hours.

Interesting shelter

posted 5 years ago

Although this shelter is not as fancy as some others, they specialize in allowing otherwise unadoptable cats to have a safe place to live their life without worrying about a time limit. Very admirable in this day & age of a throw-away society!

Pros: help the most unwanted special needs cats

Cons: too small of a facility

Really liked the doc here. He was great with Cappy and the staff was very friendly too. Nice clean facility near downtown Lombard. I've only been there once so far, but I will absolutely be back!
