MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter/Humane Society of Schoolcraft County is the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals and the extension of humane education.
POLICY: It is the policy of the society to provide humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in Schoolcraft County; to seek to return lost animals to their owners; to seek suitable homes for animals without owners. We are a 'quality of life oriented animal shelter' and every effort will be made to find permanent, responsible homes. We have a nine (9) member Board of Directors (who also serve as volunteers), with officers elected yearly.
Fundraisers are continual each year, with some favorites being done repeatedly. We operate on a donation basis, with the County Board and City Council each contributing a small portion each year towards the daily operating expenses of the animal shelter. We have a shelter manager, along with an assistant manager, and 2 custodial ladies who clean daily, and these are the only paid employees of the shelter - all are worth their weight in gold plus; all other work is done by volunteers.
Our shelter is named for the lady who operated our county's first animal shelter in her home for 19 years. The new shelter building was opened in 1999, built by volunteers with donated material. Over 2,000 animals have passed through our doors since the opening. One dog was in our care for 13 months when the right person finally came through the door looking for a pet and found Tommy.
All animals in our care receive socializing in order to be adopted out, and dogs receive obedience training. All adopted cats and dogs are spayed or neutered; all cats and kittens are tested for feline leukemia and we permit adoption of only those who test healthy. All animals have been wormed and have had initial vaccinations. Cats and kittens are in colony rooms, while dogs are in kennels.
The reason we do this........WE CARE......we care about the plight of the lost, stray or unwanted animals and want to give them all the best that we can, including lots of love. We shed tears of joy when an animal friend finds a new home, knowing the friend will be better cared for than we could ever do, with 24 hour care and love. We also know that within hours, days or weeks, the spot that the newly adopted pet leaves will be filled again, unfailingly, and that we have yet another pet to instill trust, care and love in.
We welcome volunteers, both young and old. We always need 'walkers' for exercising the dogs, and laps for kitties to sit and nap on. And we always need donations, be it in money, food, kitty litter, treats, bedding, and nothing is turned down. We need desperately need a quarantine building with a separate entrance for the newcomers to our shelter, i.e. quarantine for dogs and cats, along with a permanent home for those cats who don't seem to be adoptable, and a fenced in quarantine dog run. We have been so fortunate that our animals have been brought in without disease, but now with PARVO in the area, this quarantine building is a MUST!
We serve Schoolcraft County which includes Manistique, Cooks, Gulliver, Seney and Germfask, as well as surrounding areas. Our pets are listed on our shelter website www.thehssc.com as well as www.petfinder.com, and www.adoptapet.com (formerly 1-800-SAVE-A-PET.COM). We have adopted animals out to new homes in Texas, Washington, New Mexico, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Virginia and also in Canada, as well as upper and lower Michigan.
