Humane Society of Monroe County

I adopted my darling Cassie (aka PeterPan) from this shelter in January of this year. I drove 9 hours to pick her up after seeing her picture on Petfinder and communicating with Jackie and Diane about her. The shelter could not have been more helpful and for my adoption fee I got a very well-cared for little girl who had been spayed, microchipped and updated on all vaccines. They even sent her home with me with her favorite toy and scarf. I know they must have been worried about sending her off with me to CT after she had been with them for 3 months, but they had checked my vet reference and reviewed my application. The shelter, while small, was extremely clean and the dog runs were huge, allowing several compatible dogs to be housed in each pen. I understand that they have a very low euthanasia rate because of the time and effort they put in on Petfinder and in networking with other less crowded shelters in the northeast. I have a very favorable impression of this shelter and encourage anyone who is considering adopting or donating to look at this Humane Society.

When the Spay/Neuter Clinics were taking place in Washington County for a few years, I was very involved, and we had many meetings which included the shelter people from Monroe County. They are just incredible - they work so hard with nothing to work with - maybe I shouldn't say this - but I am going to because it's true - they make us here look rich. And they don't give up. They go on abuse and neglect calls faithfully. They work tirelessly. I hope so much they get the help and support they need and so deserve.
