The Humane Society of Ottawa County is a 501c3 non-profit, no-kill animal shelter that was established in 1976. Since then it has grown to be an important service to the community, not only for animals, but for adults and children as well. The HSOC is run solely on donations and receives no taxpayer moneys. Our organization prides itself in caring for the animals of Ottawa County. We try to help as many animals as possible by correcting abuse and neglect, spaying/neutering each animal, providing medical care to those in need, and adopting abandoned, surrendered and abused animals to new loving homes. Our goal is to spay/neuter each animal in addition to vaccinating, blood testing, and medicating each as necessary before adopting them to a new family.
In 2006 we took in roughly 300 cats, 150 dogs, and 3 rabbits. We are limited on how many animals we can help because the funds are not always there and there just isn’t enough room at the humane society to keep them. Our current shelter sits on several acres. We have plans to build a new shelter, but are waiting to gain adequate funds before we begin any construction. The wonderful HSOC volunteers do great work with coming up with different fundraisers and adoption events to keep the money coming in. We would like to thank all of our members and volunteers for their support!!

The Place to Go For A Pet

posted 7 years ago

We adopted our beloved Tasha when she was four months old nearly 12 years ago. She had been placed once but was returned due to her grouchy attitude. They didn't give up on her and neither did we. They never give up and have given some animals a safe and loving place for several years. We are a vey small county so the odds of beating the larger shelters is slim but they sure need a new home,

Pros: A loving dedicated staff

Cons: Not enough room

Proud of our humane society

posted 7 years ago

Every time I have had any contact with the humans at the shelter they have been wonderful. I have had the chance to meet many of the dogs and cats that have been adopted out from the shelter. They have been well cared for before their adoption. The shelter runs on volenteers and they do hard work that helps many animals that would not have a chance without them.

Pros: The hard work of the staff shows in the quality of the animals

Cons: The building is just too small for the needs of our county
