The Washington Area Humane Society (WAHS) is a no-kill shelter, funded solely by private contributions. Our shelter takes in as many as 4,000 animals annually and investigates an average of 800 abuse complaints per year.

Our Mission is to:
• provide shelter, safety and food for the orphaned and abused animals of Washington County with the goal of placing them in loving homes;

• provide public education about the humane care and treatment of animals;

• provide affordable veterinary outpatient services including spaying or neutering; and

• investigate and resolve abuse cases in the best interests of the animal and community.

We do not euthanize animals to make room for other animals. We pride ourselves on giving every animal a second, even third chance at a loving permanent home regardless of age or medical condition. Our only exceptions are those cases where "quality of life" is severely affected and for cases of public safety. We would not knowingly allow an animal to suffer nor pose a safety risk to the community.

We need dedicated volunteers and your economic help to continue to operate. Every donation counts.

i started volenteering at wahs yesterday so far i love it i'm so syced to be with the animals i can only go on weekends but thats a lot better than never.it was so funny today i was in the puppy/small dog room and the 2 dogs in there today tiny and nutter butter so tiny was on her second stay and i was playing with her so the she gets adopted so then i was playing with nutter butter and he got adopted. they have a nice 2 acres to walk dogs on and 3 pens to let them off leash. they have well educated staff of only 15 members Fay the volenteer coordinator is very nice and keeps us up to date on every thing. the dogs usually get out once a day so when they're out they're reved up and ready to run. so when you walk in don't be surprised if it's crowded and if the dogs see leashes they get excited. and remember the dogs have very different personalities whaen they are out of they're cages so don't just pass them by if they're barking or sitting in a corner ask to see them don't just open up the cage.,also remember the volenteers might not know everything about the animals just yet so try asking a staff member if that happens.

Pros: no kill shelter

Cons: small space
