I've always known that our little shelter does an amazing job, but on my recent trip to the shelter, I was struck by the volume of beautiful animals there - and to be perfectly honest, the lack of overpowering smell that can go along with housing that many pets. It goes much further than that though. As I scanned the rows of cat cages to see who had been there the longest, or who had a unique story, one of the employees would point out on animal after another, saying things like, "Did you see how pretty his eyes are?" or "Did you notice what an intelligent look she has?"

As I reached in to pet a particularly friendly longhaired gray and white kitty, I was asked, "Did you notice she is missing a leg?" I was shocked. How could I not notice something like that? Her warm and friendly personality was much more apparent than her physical impairment. Poor little Mossie had been found in pretty rough shape, with a gunshot wound. She lost her front left leg and part of her breastbone, but with the loving care that she has received at our shelter, she has overcome her manmade disability. She will be a loving, beautiful companion to that special someone that is fortunate enough to adopt her.

We are a NO-KILL shelter that receives no government funding. We rely solely on donations and fundraising events. SPCA officers, directors and volunteers all work tirelessly to raise the required operating funds. Each year we care for hundreds of homeless, abused and abandoned animals. Our foster homes help us to care for many animals that have special needs.

May Your Work Be Blessed

posted 6 years ago

Since our recent lose of our border collie I have found myself searching the area shelters websites. out of the seven or more that I continue to browse I find myself returning to Allegany Co.'s SPCA. There unwavering support and volunteerism to the animals in this shelter is to be commended. In the many times I have visited it has always been clean, the staff friendly and the animals very well taken care of. My God continue to bless their work and finances

My heart goes out to all those who volunteer and the animals homed there. I can't imagine why anyone would abandon or abuse such beautiful animals.

Please won't you consider; if you are able to help either through volunteering or monitarily

Pros: No Kill Shelter

Cons: Under Funded

Nicely kept, friendly staff that's very caring.

posted 7 years ago

I have been looking for a second dog and have gone to many SPCA's in my area yet the Allegany Co. SPCA was the most helpful of all of them. It is a smaller shelter with more dogs than some of the larger ones yet the animals are clean, socialized and treated with love. I would not hesitate to adopt an animal from this shelter and if I lived closer I would be volunteering here. Thank heavens for these caring people. I hope that they realize how much they are appreciated.

Pros: Very helpful staff of caring individuals. Animals are treating with love and respect.

Cons: This shelter needs more resources yet the employees work hard with what they have.

Pet Land

March 29, 2008 | By Joann M.

Nice store, helpful staff. My one issue is my concern for some of the pet adoption practices. I am a softy and can't help but feel sorry for the animals that end up in any pet store.
