Founded in 1927, Little Shelter is the oldest no-kill humane society in Suffolk County. We rescue dogs and cats from as near as the New York metro area and from as far away as Arkansas. No companion animal is turned away because he/she is considered unadoptable because we believe every life is precious. Little Shelter helps people in the community who have pet related problems. Our Animal Soup Kitchen (ASK) provides pet food, spay/neuter, medical care, and shelter for animals whose guardians cannot afford these items. ASK also maintains hundreds of feral cat colonies on Long Island through the implementation of a trap/neuter/release program. The ASK team also assists senior citizens and mentally and physically challenged people with services for their dogs and cats. ASK's outreach also extends into the schools as hundreds by teaching the proper way to handle and care for pets to thousands of children each school year.

Little Shelter also maintains a sanctuary in upstate Lisle, NY. Currently, there is a facility which houses 12 dogs who have issues preventing them from being adopted. A loving caretaker lives in the building and gives these special canines all the comforts of home. In the spring, ground will be broken for a cattery which will house 100 felines.

Currently, Little Shelter is fundraising for a new medical center to be built on the Huntington site. Our dogs and cats must now travel quite a few miles for routine and extraordinary medical care. Even those few miles can be uncomfortable for a sick or injured animal. And certainly just a short distance could mean life or death to a critically ill pet. Our state-of-the-heart medical center will include a veterinarian who will be able to treat injuries and illnesses, administer vaccines, and perform spay/neuter surgeries for all our rescued little ones.

While our facility may be 80 years young, we are proud of the innovations we have made. In the last few years, we have constructed 5 real life rooms to provide additional comfort for some of our dogs and to better show them to prospective adopters. A very generous volunteer is in the process of adding two more of these rooms for our dogs.

Our cattery now houses 300 felines in several open areas. Our cats are permitted to have "the run of the place" so they will not be stressed when potential adopters come to call.

Little Shelter may be small in size but we have tremendous heart. Both staff members and volunteers put the animals first in all they do. Big things are always happening at Little Shelter. Visit our web site at www.littleshelter.com to learn more about us.

Animal In-Activism

posted 5 years ago

I wanted to write a fair review, but I have to tell it like it is. Bottom line is that we're a caring family of three, who had taken care of a stray cat for years, even so much as to spend thousands on vet care for a cat that we kept outdoors. After 12 years the cat passed (another $500 for a cremation), so we decided to adopt a house cat.

Little Shelter decided to turn us down, with no explantion. All we can think of is that they were concerned we'd let the cat outside, which we agreed not to. They have over 400 cats there! It boggles my mind that they felt the cat we picked out was better off in their (somewhat dirty) shelter than in our loving, caring, CLEAN home.

I suppose we should thank them, as we adotped a cat in Islip, who is now the love of our lives, and couldn't be happier.

Pros: Knowlegable staff

Cons: See below
