Great place for all furry creatures

An awesome shelter with an awesome staff. They have come so far since 2006...........kudos to them!

you have to see it to believe it. Cat runs instead of cages. Unfortunately the shelter operates entirley on donations otherwise I am sure this shelter would make lots of new inovations. They are getting there slowly but surely. They can only do a little at a time because of the low funds but their heart is in the right place and somehow no matter how long it takes I expect they will find a way/ At least I hope so for the sake of all the many abandoned animals that come through the doors.
This shelter deserves to get the very best because they give the very best to their strays and lots of love and care

As I go back and look over my review I think that the Freeport shelter that needs so much help and no one to help it I am very sad but then again I wish all the sheltesr could get some help. when they are no kill and receive no funding from the muncipality that they are in it is heart breaking. instead of one shelter winning this contest maybe zootoo can decide to help several of them and not just one. I know how hard it is to keep up with the expenses that a no kill shelter incurs.
Hopefully this contest will end up benefiting many shelters and hopefully and deservedly Freeport should be one of them. Good luck to all of you who are like all of us and care for the stray and unwanted animals that are discarded like old garbage. So Sad but it takes volunteers like us to do the right thing and we are a mulltitude of them that continue to help find them loving and caring homes.
Thank you zootoo for caring along with the rest of us.
Pros: Warm, knowledgable, caring people who love animals
Cons: Continues to need more renovations but moving in the right direction.

Well on their way to being a great shelter
posted 5 years ago
Freeport Shelter has made leaps and bounds in the last year. The cats are living in enclosures rather than cages, the dogs have new runs and are getting daily exercise. But most of all...people are starting to consider the Freeport Shelter when they want to adopt a pet. Living on Long Island all my life...up until a year ago...I didnt even know there was a shelter in Freeport. As the facility improves, more and more people are taking notice. By this time next year...Freeport will be THE place to adopt a pet on the South Shore.
Pros: A no kill shelter that has come a long way
Cons: Sometimes short staffed and in need of renovations

Such a nice shelter!
posted 5 years ago
The Freeport Shelters best asset is the staff and volunteers. Everyone truly cares about the animals, their well-being, and their happiness. It is a joyous event when one of the dogs or cats gets a new home. Especially one that has been there a while. The only thing the Freeport shelter needs is money. Luckily there are generous people who volunteer to do work and fix up the place....but it could really use some more updating. But in the meantime...they do the best they can with what they have...and every animal there is appreciative.
Pros: Wonderful Shelter!
Cons: They need funding

The best in SO many ways!
posted 5 years ago
This is a most wonderful place. Freeport Shelter went from kill to no-kill in 2006 and has struggled successfully to maintain its no-kill status, upgrading the physical plant and renovating little by little.
Although they still need money very badly, they work tirelessly to make sure the animals are well cared for and that the shelter is an inviting place for both the general public and the volunteers.
Staff is lovely and they care deeply about what happens to the animals. A highly worthwhile 501c to contribute to( I sure have), and a shelter worth supporting. The animals are lucky indeed.
Check us out. We LOVE our shelter!
Pros: Very humane, kind staff...great new cat enclosures, accomodating staff and volunteers.
Cons: Still needs more renovations, but moving along nicely.

A nice place to come to look for a pet. Everyone is very helpful and they really seems to care. My hope is that more people will hear what a great shelter Freeport is and consider them when looking to adopt a pet.
Pros: Everyone works so hard to find pets homes
Cons: None
