Animal Welfare Society, Inc. is an independent, non-profit, non-destroy organization founded in 1965.
Our Mission is to aid and find loving, permanent homes for abandoned, stray, and abused cats and dogs in New Milford, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Roxbury, and Washington, Connecticut.
Each year hundreds of dogs and cats find refuge at our shelter located at 8 Dodd Road in New Milford, Connecticut. Abandoned dogs are rescued from the Regional Canine Facility in New Milford after the mandatory 7-day waiting period. AWS also makes periodic trips to New York City's overpopulated dog pounds and brings their animals to our shelter for placement. Our cats are found abandoned in the area we serve.
From the moment these animals enter the shelter, they are no longer unwanted. Each is a special pet waiting for a caring, responsible, permanent home.
All our residents are provided with the best veterinary care possible in a shelter setting.
Routine care includes:
- Standard distemper combinations
- Rabies innoculations for both dogs and cats
- Preventative worming and treatment for other parasites
- Feline leukemia testing for cats
- Heartworm testing and treatment for dogs and all dogs are microchipped

I love this shelter
posted 4 years ago
I love this shelter one reason is because i have adopted my last two dogs from here. One was Gilly then after she past we adopted Preston and changed his name to Max.This shelter always takes good care of the animals. There is always some one to play with them and they have a great area for the dogs to play. Everyone who works there cares so much and never wants to see a dog unhappy so like when we went to go look for a dog for my grandmother they always tryed to pair the dog up with the best home possible. They would recomend dogs that they thought fit best in her area
Pros: There is always someone there for the animals
Cons: the animals still have to sleep on the cold ground

Great shelter
posted 4 years ago
Animal Welfare is a wonderful organization. They are no-kill, and they are always trying to do more stuff at their shelter, such as offering obedience classes, expanding their space, etc. They advertise prominently in the local paper, and seem to work hard to place the animals in good homes. Wonderful shelter!
Pros: always aiming higher
Cons: none!

I went to this vets office today, I was stopping in to see if they had any Feliway cat spray to help with destressing my cats. They are not my regular vet and I won't change, because I… more ›
