Supporting Shelter: Friends Forever Humane Society

Supporting Rescue: Critter Camp Exotic Pet Sanctuary

Pros: Only Sanctuary of its kind in the US

Cons: Needs more funds and room

As the director of Critter Camp Exotic Pet Sanctuary I may be a tad biased :) However, Critter Camp is an amazing place! It is a 501c3 non-profit charitable 100% no kill organization operated by volunteers.
We take in all of the 'forgotten' pets that other shelters do not accept. We care for over 200 abandoned, abused, neglected and otherwise homeless pets of 30 different species! Critter Camp offer hands-on educational fun tours to meet the animals here too! Being only about 2 hours west of Chicago we have quite a few people coming to visit the animals here!
Currently the sanctuary is operated out of our home, with the volunteers coming here to help out.
We have plans for a 'green' sanctuary building that will use passive and active solar and wind power as well as composting and other environmentally sound procedures; and house over 650 homeless pets!
Our Belief:
At a certain point re-homing pets, particularly the unusual and exotic
ones, at all costs often serves only to make the people involved feel
better about themselves, irregardless of the stability and continuity of
care the elderly, abused or ill animal, actually needs. Euthanizing such
animals brings the rescuer down to the universally despised level of
“puppy-mills” in that if an animal is no longer useful to humans it
must be killed. This is incredibly heartbreaking. Again, people bred every
one of these pet animals for human enjoyment and/or profit, therefore
we as humans have an obligation to provide quality care for these
animals for their entire lives whether or not they are “pet quality.”

Be sure to check out the website www.crittercamp.biz !!!!!! See the plans for teh building, and pictures of the animals too!
