Pros: A "no-kill" rescue group; animal stays in foster home system until permanent home is found.
Cons: Not enough foster homes and not enough donations, like any non-profit
Adopt-A-Pet does not have a shelter facility to house its adoptable animals, so operates through a foster home system. Cats, dogs and rabbits are available for adoption. The Fargo Petco hosts Adoption Days every 2 weeks for Adopt-A-Pet; either on Saturdays from noon-2:30 pm for the months of October through April, or on Tuesdays from 6-8 pm for the months of May through September.
Animals can be viewed either at Petco or the foster family's home. Viewing the animal in a home is in a more natural setting and more similiar to the environment where it will ultimately live. The potential adopter is better able to assess temperament and behavior, and to learn a lot about the animal from the foster parent while visiting the animal in its foster home.
The animal can also be brought to the potential adopter's home to see how well the newcomer will fit in with the rest of the family--human and other pets. There is a two week trial period in which the animal can be returned to Adopt-A-Pet if the right match isn't made.
I usually say that it is the animal that picks the person, not really the person who picks the animal. Some pet relationships are just meant to be, and the right animal at the right time will cross paths with the right human eventually.
