Supporting Rescue: Black And Orange Cat Foundation
Pros: wonderful volunteers
Cons: high euth. rate, few pass their temperment testing, paid admin staff makes too much money
Like with most shelters, there is good and there is bad. You always hope the good outweights the bad. But with CAH is does not.
First the good news, I know when they got in shipments of food and they had extra, they offered it up to rescues and even to our shelter. When they got in extra wormer, again, they gave us some. They seem willing to really help when they can on some stuff.
I have met several of their volunteers who are just very wonderful. They care so much for the animals.
However, it is these same volunteers who has told me that CAH has a very, very strict temperment test. And if the animal shows even on ounce of not passing, it is put down. I know because I will have volunteers begging me to take in a dog if they are sure it will not pass the test for fear it will be put down.
I would hope that CAH does know that not all animals are perfect. If they were, most would not be turned into the shelters or dumped. Each animal might have an issue, but some of those issues could be worked with. CAH does not usually take that time to do so which is a shame.
I have also been told that families are not allowed to bring their dog to the shelter to meet any new dogs. That is a big no no in their book. I was also told that was to change. I have not heard that it has.
I also have a major beef that their director makes over 6 figures. I just can not get over this. I know running a shelter is very hard work. There is alot to go over and make sure things are running smoothly. However, their director also has several right hand persons in charge of their own departments. Again, I just can not believe the amount of funds going to salary.
And yes, it upsets me as I am the HSMC shelter director and I volunteer all my time which is usually over 40 hours a week, attend off site adoptions, head up fundraisers. Which the CAH Director does not do. To know that folks donate to help pay somebody that much money is upsetting.
I do know a few of their board members and I know they are working on changes. Ones that I hope is good.
I hope telling what I know will not hurt the HSMC as I like it when shelters can work together. I just think CAH can do better.
