German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama

German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama (GSRCA) is a 501(c)(3) non profit 'No Kill' rescue organization. It is composed of unpaid volunteers that do this in their spare time. The rescue is breed specific in that it only rescues German Shepherd dogs. GSRCA is based in Montgomery AL. They take dogs primarily from shelters in Alabama, stray, neglected or abused dogs. Occassionally an owner surrendered dog is taken in but that depends on available space. The rescue does not have a central location for all the dogs to be seen. It operates utilitizing foster homes throughout the state of AL.

Adoption is a process that GSRCA takes very seriously. It is the rescues commitment to the dogs to see that their next home is loving, secure and forever. It starts with an application which can be found at www.gsdcentral.petfinder.com The references will be checked and a home visit done. If all findings are satisfactory, the applicant is approved. Only after approval is the applicant invited to visit the dogs. This process takes anywhere from one to three weeks, usually.

Before a dog is posted as adoptable, it is examined by the vet. The dog is tested for heartworms and if positive, treatment is given. All dogs are made current on shots and are spayed/neutered. Any chronic health conditions are treated. The dogs are fed a premium dog kibble (Canidae), crate trained and worked with to learn basic manners. Adoption fee is $300 for most dogs. Seniors are $150. Dogs go to their adoptive homes with health records, leash and collar and a three day supply of food and treats.

GSRCA is available to adopters for as long as needed. Adopting a dog hopefully develops into a long term family-type relationship. While most adoptions are successful, some may not be. It is the requirement of the rescue that the dog is brought back so GSRCA can re-evaluate and re-home the dog.
