Supporting Shelter: Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center

Pros: An Environment of Love and Comfort

Cons: None - Except, a the Staff Would Say, "It's Still not a Home"

My partner and I adopted my two cats, Tess and Bart, from Little Shelter on January 2, 2005. I had previously donated some items there after the death of my previous cat, Pan.

My partner and I were both really impressed by the physical setup of the cattery - cats weren't caged unless they had to be for some reason, but, rather, were in rooms shared rooms with plenty of beds and cat trees. When my partner wandered into the laundry room, there were even cats happily sleeping on piles of towels in there!

Also impressive was the obvious dedication and affection of the staff and volunteers.

The first night at our home was actually very hard for the cats - it seemed like they really missed the companionship of their "roommates," and, of course, tehy didn;t undertsand why they had been taken to this new place (after having been brought there from someone's backyard initially.

A staff member called the next day to see how things were going. I told her I was afraid I'd made a terrible mistake - not because I didn't love an want them, but because they seemed so unhappy. She was very reassuring and patient and "talked me down" from my anxiety and despair (due partly to a fairly sleepless night of worrying and staying with the cats in the living room and hearing them cry).

Well, here we are in 2008, and they are as happy as can be - Lord and lady of the apartment, with beds in every window (plus hte biggest cat bed - the one in the bedroom that they grudgingly share with us), a fountain (they had one at the Shelter, how can I not have one here?), and two very loving companions.

The work Little Shelter does is AMAZING, and I have been sponsoring a cat there since shortly after the adoptions, in memory of Pan and her predecessor Groucho, who died of cancer after a valiant 5-year struggle

I strongly recommend that anyone on LI who is looking for animal companionship go to Little Shelter.
