What a great group. I started volunteering May 2007 and the first thing I noticed was how dedicated, undaunted and persevering the other volunteers were. So many of them had been with the group for several years, which I don't think you find in most places.
We rescue dogs out of kill shelters, most of them are about to be euthanized when we take them. Some of them are old and have been discarded, some of them are young and have been thrown out, and most of them have a sad story behind them. All of them need to be rehabilated and all of them deserve, safe,caring and loving 'forever' homes.
While they are with us we make sure they are taken care of medically and physically. They are neutered and fed good quality food. Most importantly the volunteers are there to provide them with human contact and the love and emotional support they need. We do the best we can to socialize them.
When a family is interested in them, we do home and vet checks and try to make sure that it will be a good fit for both the dog and family, we don't give our 'babies' to just anyone.
Once they are adopted, if training help or advice is needed we are still there for them and their new families.
Many rescue groups get cute little puppies who are easy to place and easy to train. We don't get too many puppies, we get alot of the hard to place dogs, like seniors, and pitts and big black ones. And yet we get them homes. It may take a little longer, but thanks to the wonderful group of volunteers and all their selfless efforts most of them go on to enjoy happy, safe and loving homes and that makes it all worth it. There's nothing like seeing them jump in "the family car", tail a waggin' ,going off to their new home.
If only we had more room, or our own place, we could save more lives. We are 100% not for profit group, all donations go to the care of the animals and because our group is small so is our budget. Winning a contest like this could mean so much.
