Like many animal rescue organizations, Martha Candy Patches’ Rescue (MCPR) formed as a result of tragedy. The organization is made up of volunteers who dedicated their time and personal funds to the now defunct Hudson County SPCA (HCSPCA). In January 2008, volunteers reported abuses and misappropriation of funds and partnered with local animal rights groups to change the HCSPCA.
In a last ditch effort to save animals before the facility closed, volunteers secured foster homes for 17 dogs, but were unable to save three wonderful animals even though homes and fosters had been secured for Martha, Candy and Patches.
Finally, when the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City was tasked with giving shelter to 15 dogs and 25 cats removed from the HCSPCA by a court order in April 2008, former HCSPCA volunteers were able to pull all of the former HCSPCA animals. Martha, Candy, and Patches became the battle cry for volunteers who vowed “never again” will loving animals suffer or die needlessly in their midst.
As many companion animals are strays or have been mistreated during their lives, some are not socialized and considered 'unadoptable' by other shelters. MCPR works diligently with fosters and trainers to ensure that companion animals build a trust of humans while offering a secure environment until they are ready to be embraced by a new owner or accepted by a no-kill sanctuary.
Animal shelter personnel who simply want to do good for companion animals should not be compelled to take on the job of destroying them. In short, killing animals is not the work of a compassionate animal rescue group nor should killing ever have to be sponsored by the charitable contributions of members, so MCPR is dedicated to pulling “death row” animals from local shelters to give them a true assessment outside of a shelter and a real “second” chance at life.
All of our animals are vetted and spayed/neutered.
