Hoarder not a 'Rescue'

posted 3 years ago

This is not a shelter, this is a hoarder situation. There are too many dogs at this small 'rescue'. Many of the dogs are running wild, there are three small dog runs for aprx 20 dogs. The dog I adopted was attached by another dog and was not given medical attention. The injuries were down played by the man that runs the shelter. They were hard to see because of her long coat, when my vet shaved around the areas we found they were infected and had to be stapled shut in hopes they would heal correctly. Both of her eyes were infected, I needed to administer eye drops, antibiotics and cream to the wounds. At any other shelter in this area the dogs are tested for temperament (ie should not go to a home with other pets or children) and heath, this is not the case at ACPR. If you have the time and resources to adopt a dog with special needs PLEASE take one of these dogs. They are being neglected, when I arrived there were dogs in the back of pickup trucks, dogs fighting and most of them looked under fed. I was advised their food was rationed. I appreciate anyone that tries to save 'unwanted' dogs but this shelter is doing more harm than good. The dogs run in packs instead of being separated and many seemed to have aggressive tendencies, these dogs should be separated from the general population. Also, I was given a shot record but when I showed it to my vet she told me they would have to be given again because a booster was not administered. I have spent over $300 on the dog in the last week and a half. I will have to spend hundreds in training because she needs more than just obedience training. She actually bit my smaller dog, I now have to keep them separated. I love dogs and I will do everything I can to help her but if she can not learn to get along with other pets and people she will have to be taken to a no kill shelter. Please be leery when adopting a dog from ACPR; these dogs need a lot of attention, specialized training and proper socialization into normal society.

Pros: none

Cons: Animal neglect
