Not what it used to be
posted 7 years ago
Years ago I received a really great loving cat from this shelter. Not too long ago I went there again just to browse around. It constantly smells of animal excretment and the dogs are always begging for attention. Im not sure if they do not have enough help but they really need to make an effort to make this place better for the animals.
Pros: staff was nice but not very attentive
Cons: A lot of dogs are agressive, need more help in keeping cages clean

PAWS is a great shelter in the Seattle area

PAWS has been around for what - 35+ years? At some point, they had to make the decision to become a "low kill" shelter. Unfortunately, while "no kill" sounds nice, it means that those shelters who call themselves "no kill" usually only pick the most adoptable animals, leaving county shelters to deal with the remaining (majority) of animals. From what I know of PAWS after volunteering there a year and a half ago, they only euthanize animals that are completely unadoptable - because they're sick or have aggression issues. Yes, it would be nice if they didn't euthanize any animals - but unfortunately, with over 8 million dogs and cats entering shelters each year, that's just not possible.
The location of PAWS is a little out of the way, but it's in a beautiful wooded area. The volunteers consist of caring people, some of whom have been volunteering for 20+ years. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the cat area/kennels are exceptionally clean.
PAWS is where my family adopted our cats and dogs from when I was a child. It was always a positive experience going there.
Pros: Caring staff, nice facility
Cons: Location is a bit out of the way
