Fire in Covelo shelter!
posted 5 years ago
In Spring 2005 after much seeking, I was directed to Barbara Thrasher's Bones Pet Rescue in Covelo, Calif. She showed me a yellow Labrador mix with what I believe to be Rhodesian Ridgeback. He looks exactly like the photo of a Ridgeback in the AKC's official book of breeds. He has webbed feet as do Ridge's. He is a great "pointer-hunter" precisely as they were trained to be in Rhodesia as lion hunters! He stalks and points at the myriad deer and rabbits surrounding my property.
Barbara found him in Eureka where he had been abandoned by his former "guardian" (sic!). He had a large welt on his rear where he had been hit. This person refused to claim him from the Animal Control who found him wandering the streets of Eureka.l Barbara "rescued" him from that shelter and healed him of heart worms and basically saved his life. I adopted him soon after and he has become a magnificent, loving companion.
Unfortunately, Barbara's shelter has recently had a fire which killed 25 of her dogs and 10 cats, all of whom were invalids in some manner and not available for adoption. Others, about 40 dogs and 100 cats and several other animals were saved as they were in outbuildings and runs. I plan to send her some money to assist in the re-building of her shelter.
I am currently writing a memoir of the several dogs I've had in my life, concluding with the beautiful story of Rex. It follows in the footsteps of such great stories as "Merle's Door", "Marley and Me" and "What Dogs Really Want". If any of you can help me find a publisher or an appropriate agent, I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you!
Pros: a very caring place for many animals
Cons: very far to visit
