A Great Place To Adopt A Pet

posted 6 years ago

We adopted both of our cats from this shelter while we lived in Bozeman, Montana. It doesn't look like much of a place - it's actually at the end of a dead-end road and is a very small facility with nowhere to park. What we found inside was one of the most well-behaved "cat rooms" that I have ever visited. There must have been 60 cats in the room, and no one was fighting. There were litter boxes and food dishes galore, and a number of carpeted cat trees for the cats to scratch on or sleep in. There were even windows with large ledges, so the cats could sun themselves or just bird watch. There was also a room set aside so a prospective owner could visit privately with the cat they wish to adopt. A great idea! We didn't see much of the dog area, but what I did see looked promising - one cage per dog (unless the dog had a buddy he liked to share with) and a pretty good size yard that the dogs could play in. The shelter also had some guinea pigs, gerbils, ferrets, rabbits and the like.

The staff was very thorough in their evaluation of us as cat owners. We were given a "quiz" that asked questions about what we consider to be proper punishment of a misbehaving cat, whether or not we were going to have the cat declawed, how we would handle a severe sickness in our pet. They also checked with our landlord to make sure it was okay for us to have a pet (lots of people hate that this is done, but really it's to protect the animal from being abandoned when the owner is caught violating their lease). We were also told that if we couldn't keep the cat that we could return it for any reason, no questions asked. It seemed to me that their number one concern is that the animals have a home, and a caring home at that.

There weren't any horribly disturbing negatives during our visits to the shelter. The only thing I can think of is that the cat room could have been cleaner, but it really wasn't disgusting or anything.

They have a fantastic website with pictures and profiles of most of the animals there (no small feat). You can find it at www.montanapets.org/hsgv

Pros: No-kill shelter, lots of animals to choose from, thorough staff, great website

Cons: Maybe not the cleanest place...
