Unfortunately, my review is not a good one...

My husband and I visited Angel Ridge, with a volunteer application in hand, hoping to volunteer our time. The website was very pleasing and we felt that an animal rescue on 50 acres was a great place to start as animal volunteers/advocates. We couldn't imagine anything but good things for animals from someone who presumably had money (home is what is considered a mansion in this area) to care for these animals. Our hopes were dashed when we went into the primary place the dogs are housed. It was a pole barn, with no sunlight and just rows of cages of dogs, sometimes several per cage, on a foundation of mud. The dogs did appear to be healthy. I couldn't even make it all the way around the building to see all of the dogs because I was sobbing so hard. Granted, this was my first experience at any kind of animal shelter, but this was not at all what I expected. We left before the owner/proprietor joined us, and I really expected her to call to see what had happened - she had 2 ready and willing volunteers at hand. She did not - perhaps she was embarrased? I have since read on the website that the dog "shelter" is being layed with concrete and a drainage system this coming weekend, so that is a blessing. But what about those dogs in the meantime? And even afterwards? There were 2 people working in the horse barn, and they weren't talkative. They did say that the cats they were sheltering mostly lived in the hayloft above the horses (I don't know anything about horses but they appeared to be very well kept), which makes me wonder if the cats are all feral and. If they aren't and if they were declawed, they are practically living outside and, well, we all know what that means - danger. We still want to volunteer, and it appears this is where we are most needed, so we are hopeful. I did notice at the PA agriculture website that this facility has been cited many times this year for non-compliance, but they have always been OK'd after making some changes. Perhaps they just take in too many animals and don't have enough volunteers? I do want to talk to the manager and see if she can clear things up for me. They obviously need help and I can't imagine anyone wanting to adopt any of those dogs, because it is just too sad to even go into that building.
Pros: 50 acres (accd to website) so animals COULD be free
Cons: terrible conditions for the dogs

I believe Angel Ridge does great things for animals, and would never give them a bad review concerning how they care for animals or the staff that works with them. I can only say that when I needed help the most, and I contacted so many places, Angel Ridge was the only place that did not contact me back, when I needed only information to help a pregnant, malnourished cat. Leaving numerous messages, and even my aunt e-mailing them, no one called back to even tell us if they knew someplace that could possibly help us to get her medical care, or even if they could help us to find her a good home. I find that even if they did not have the capacity to care for this animal, calling back to let me know that that was the case, would have been a wonderful position to go from. Instead, I was able to get the information I needed from PetSearch, which also does wonderful animal care. As I said, the animal care at Angel Ridge has never seemed an issue to me, but the common courtesy is what has made me dislike this rescue so much.
Pros: great animal care, wonderful staff and volunteers, wonderful placement services
Cons: unreliable, not always available to help
