In Need of a Makeover

posted 6 years ago

I adopted two cats from Helping Paws two years ago. My family went to visit the shelter, specifically the cat room, as part of a scheduled appointment to meet the two. The staff were so kind, going out of their way to meet us.
The room was full of cats, maybe around 15-18 and not very large. I believe it may have been a horse stall at one time (?), and there was a window through which the cats could go to a small outdoor enclosure- a nice touch. The smell was quite overwhelming however, and it was dirty- like a basement feel. The cats seemed happy enough and I reminded myself that they were fed and watered and had warmth and shelter which were better than the alternative. We were happy to adopt from there.
I do check their website occasionally and there are many of the same cats STILL there after 2 years, though I don't see that as anyone's fault. HPs have many adoption clinics and do a pretty good amount of advertising, but they obviously would GREATLY benefit from a large donation or a shelter makeover. The people and animals involved are very deserving from my point of view.
They also did a good job of following up after we adopted. We received 2-3 phone calls from volunteers asking how things were going. After dealing with a few initial medical issues when we first had the cats, two years later, they are doing great and we are so glad to have them.

Pros: Volunteers are kind, caring, friendly and do the best they can with what they have

Cons: Shelter needs work, more help

This rescue is operated by Karen and her husband Joe. They rely greatly on volunteers! The animals there receive the best care!

Pros: Helps unwanted, abused, neglected animals

Cons: Needs funding for repairs!
