Supporting Shelter: Frisky's Wildlife Primate Sanctuary
Pros: Enriching snack
Cons: none
Many people who keep reptiles, birds, or exotics like to purchase mealworms as supplementary food. Mealworms contain a great deal of protein and crude protein and have a high moisture content. They are also typically easier to raise and keep alive compared to crickets, surviving well on a diet of bran/oatmeal, fruit, and vegetable. In addition, they are also much cheaper than most live feed that are available on the market.
Mealworms are the larval form of the mealworm beetle of the genus Tenebrio. There are two main species; the common or yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) is the most popular. Purchase them when they are small, then place them in the refrigerator when they have reached a desirable size, and they will go into a dormant state and consequentially keep for months.
