Great post.
It is true; this contest seems to favor the shelter that can find the most affiliates. It seems that getting the most points is tied directly to the population that the shelter serves. In my opinion, those numbers do not necessarily dictate which shelter is in the most need of repair.
I find about 10-15% of the affiliates actually gained the most points during the first phase of the contest, and it seems that same percentage did the most voting in phase III.
Also, the idea of awarding a prize of this magnitude based solely on folks joining a website and navigating it, which can be arduous, is beyond me. Personally, I think that having a phone-in, similar to American Idol, for example, will level the playing field so that anyone, anywhere can call a number and vote. They can limit the number of calls based on the originating phone number.
Also – I would personally charge $1.00 per vote. I would not mind paying $7.00 ($1.00 per day) to vote for my shelter, knowing that this money would go directly to the shelters. After covering the expense of a phone service to handle the flood of calls, that would help give a $1,000,000 check to payout. 143,000 people paying $1.00 per vote for 7 days = $1-mil.
At the end of the day, as you and many others have mentioned, the ultimate beneficiaries of Zootoo are the strays and homeless pets all over the United States. It is a great project, and I’m happy to have been a part of it. Read less
