As a voter and animal lover, I am very much interested in hearing from the candidates about animal issues, and I'd like to hear what they plan to do to improve the situation for animals, pet shelters and rampant euthanization of pets in practice across America. And, I do hope this journal and our responses will help to get the point across to each candidate that we mean it when we say this is an issue of great importance to many voters. I wonder if they are afraid of speaking out on an issue they may feel they don't have to respond to in order to get elected? Perhaps some fear being labelled too liberal for some more conservative voters, when they already are being attacked by some on other issues. There are lots of people against heaping on legislation for the control of more and more issues, and there is plenty of negative press to be gained out there for any public official asking for more money for just about anything. So they may see it safer for all the presidential hopefuls just to have no comment. Their ad campaigns have to be telling them not to add fuel to the fire by speaking out about animal issues, though their voting histories do speak volumes to the few voters willing to take the time and effort to look. Funny though, all of them want to be seen hugging babies, going to visit with workers in various industries, and sitting down to eat with people in towns on the campaign trail. When will we ever see a political candidate visiting a struggling animal shelter or hugging a pet about to be euthanized? I wonder! So far there has been an awful lot of talk about CHANGE, bringing real change into politics and into Washington. Yet, so far, we've seen some very artfully crafted responses to problematic issues as they have come up for each of the candidates. What's different, new, or better about any of that? I'm still looking for the change that will bring hope to America, and as far as I'm concerned animal issues are as important as global warming, the economy, the housing market, and even poverty - because we can't begin to hope for a kinder and better country for ourselves if we don't rank animals and pets right along side the progeny of homo sapiens.
