VICTORVILLE • A former Adelanto Animal Control supervisor charged with drowning 50 kittens will serve 90 days of weekend jail as part of a plea bargain, officials said Friday.
Kevin Murphy, 38, faced six misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, but that was reduced to four counts under the plea agreement.
In addition to 90 days in jail served on weekends, Murphy must also pay a $350 fine and undergo six weeks of counseling.
The deal between Deputy District Attorney Robin Hass and Murphy’s defense attorney Brian Watson was agreed to by Judge Jules Fleuret.
At the time he was originally charged in March 2008, Supervising Deputy District Attorney Jim Hill said that Murphy was facing six years in prison and a maximum fine of $20,000.
Murphy reportedly drowned the kittens over a four month period.
Hass said that if Murphy violates any part of the plea agreement or violates any law during his three years probation he will face up to four years in jail.
“If he doesn’t do the counseling, if he doesn’t do the jail time, if he doesn’t pay the fines, you can bet I’ll be arguing for the full four years,” Hass said.
