It's another issue of educating the public. Most people have no idea where that adorable puppy (or kitten) came from, and I wouldn't have thought about it either several years ago. I was involved in an NC puppy mill bust where a man and wife had over 500 animals on about 2 acres of land - dogs never in their entire lives got out of breeding boxes and stood in feces and urine until they were blinded. In spite of tumors and cancers, they produced litter after litter - some lost all teeth from calcium depletion. Sadly, too many residents in that county still believed it was "property" and the Animal Legal Defense Fund had no right to interfere. BTW - ALDF is great! They won the legal case and shut it down.
