Do you mean FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) or FELV (feline leukemia)? I suspect since you mentioned cancer, it is the FELV. Either way, both are easy to test for at the vets. Any time I consider introducing a new cat, I always get those tests done to make sure the cats are healthy- as both are easily transmitted to other cats. I've never heard of FEV.
I do know FIV can cause seizures... not sure about FELV. And yes, I have heard of cats having a reaction to food that can cause seizures. I had a cat allergic to one food so bad she lost most of her hair-- but other foods were fine, so it just depends.
Sounds like you are (I hope) still making progress. Check with your local SPCA or humane society for any suggestions-- they deal with FIV/FELV on a daily basis, I am sure. Plus, they usually can provide some free advice. Some vets will also, so it can't hurt to ask.
My best to you and Gizmo.
