Greater awareness of and more support for our animal shelters from all corners of life, especially those with big voices, like Presidential candidates, is desperately needed. Perhaps, as someone mentioned below, all the fines collected for animal cruelty cases, and maybe even the local monies collected for pet licenses, could be funneled into local "no kill" shelters. That isn't much, to be sure, but every penny would help, like to story of the man who threw washed-up starfish back into the ocean and when asked why, since he could not possibly save them all, replied that perhaps he saved one. Whatever dollars that could be shared with shelters could help in the same way. Maybe the money collected from one fine or license could feed a shelter dog for a week--just long enough for it to find a family. The best pet we ever had, our much-beloved "Lady," was chosen by us from a "no-kill" shelter many years ago. She brought us such joy over the years and was very much a member of our family. All of our pets have been shelter animals, unwanteds, or strays--they are the BEST! Our politicians could help significantlynot only with funding, but just by getting the word out. Make people aware!!
Come on, Mr. McCain and others, I challenge you to step up to this plate. Let us see a more sensitive and humane side of you. Show us you are ONE OF US!
