To begin with, you both are misquoting the prices. Puppies, under the age of 1 year have a $125.00 adoption fee. This fee is comprised of the actual adoption fee, the required $30 spay/neuter deposit of which you get returned once you present a certificate of spay/neuter, vaccines and license. All other dogs are $100, the same fees included. The actual adoption fee is minimal, and because the other required fees have risen on our end, and the state of the economy, we had no choice but to raise our adoption fees.
Because we are a shelter, and the majority of animals come in as strays, we have no background on them to provide you. We still strongly recommend that you take all animals adopted from any shelter, to a vet to be checked within 48 hours, as no shelter can guarantee the health of a stray animal they know nothing about.
In order to properly run a facility, keep it clean and disease free, you have vast overhead costs in personnel, supplies, food, medication, etc.. This is only my opinion, but if someone cannot afford $125 for an animal, then they can't afford the upkeep and proper health care/vet costs for it either, and probably should not have it. Providing an animal with "the love and affection they need" requires much more than a pat on the head and a hug now and then. It requires keeping them fed healthy with quality food, proper vet care and preventatives such as flea medication monthly.
So in closing, I ask you if you could spend your gas to pick up dogs and cats, feed them for as long as necessary, provide them wormer and vaccines, pay personnel to clean up after them and care for them daily ... all on $60. Read Less
