I have a dog from a puppy mill who was then sold to a pet store. She sat in that confinement until she was 4 mo. old. Then finally someone bought her but as a gift for someone else. The person she was given to didn't want her and that is how I came to be her owner when she was 8 mo. old. She is a wonderful dog and I love her so much but she missed out on so many things puppies need like socialization, playing with other puppies so they learn just how hard they are allowed to bite, and the biggest of all - housebreaking.

Puppy mills are some of the most putrid of places and I think the breeder should be held accountable but also pet stores should also be visited and reviewed. I can't tell you how many times I've asked an employee where they got their dogs and was told they were all from local breeders. I live in FL and I'm pretty sure PA doesn't count as local. It's such a disservice to the dogs because how could they not have issues after being held at the breeder's then shipped all over until a store says they will take the puppy, then sits in a small area being gawked at and teased through their glass, and is most likely purchased by someone because they want to "rescue" the cute puppy or they just have to have that furry little face without doing any research on the breed, thinking about how it will change the household, and what are the monetary and time amounts raising the puppy will be.

I think the industry as a whole needs to be worked over, breeders, transportation of puppies, pet stores that sell them, and like shelters people have to fill out an application before being able to buy the dog to make sure it's going to an appropriate home. Read Less
