This is just another on of those laws that got made because people are too lazy to research anything. I have to beg to differ on that "100%" mortality statistic too since there's a red eared slider in my parents pond back home that says otherwise.
Any pet should be researched before you get it. Red eared sliders get to a decent size and need quite a decent size aquarium along with basking spots and UVB lighting. That's really not that hard to provide anymore.
I think the law should be changed somewhat. I think it should still include red eared sliders and other 'cheap' aquatic turtles, so that they're already a decent size and someone can't get away with just sticking it in a small size critter keeper. Though, the land tortoises could probably be dropped off that list. I prefer to buy mine a bit smaller so I can ensure that it gets started on a healthy diet right from the start.
HSUS is just grouchy cause they still haven't managed to ban all reptiles. Read Less
