How do you convince someone to put your shelter in the top 10 when there are 20 to pick from. I assume that all these shelters are worthy and I'm sure some are more worthy than others. We are a small shelter. We provide care for animals that have no where else to go. We will open up homes of volunteers and we will go out looking… read more

I couldn't be at there when you were visiting, but I've heard great stories about that day. I really wish I could have been there with my Safe Haven dogs.
We have adopted two dogs from Safe Haven. Our first dog, Sid, lived at the shelter for almost nine months. He had picked up as a stray and would have been euthanized if Safe Haven hadn't been there to save him. Our other dog was a referral through Safe Haven, but never lived at the shelter. His owners were getting divorced and couldn't keep him. I don't know what would have happened to him if this resource wasn't there.
Shortly after adopting our second dog, we started volunteering for Safe Haven. I have never seen people do so much with so little. We are a small shelter, but I think we've managed to do great things with Rinthea's direction. With only limited funds from donors and grants it is hard to do a lot of things. Nothing comes easily when you have limited money, but Rinthea and the board members manage to stretch every dollar.
When we started volunteering, I was amazed at the long term goals that Rinthea had. For a shelter that sometimes struggles to make ends meet, I could see how they could get caught up in the short term, but with plans for a dog park and possible obedience classes for the community, I could tell that the volunteers were planning on being here for a very long time, no matter what it took to get there. I think that community education is key to helping prevent more lost/stray animals and I was so happy to see that they were working all aspects, not just those already without homes.
I am so proud to be part of an organization that works to correct a problem that no one else wanted to take on. Thank you so much for the opportunity to improve our shelter and have a place to talk with other animal lovers. Not everyone gets how much we love our pets, even those that are only with at the shelter temporarily. I hope you put us in the top ten. We were excited just to be part of the top 20 and the top 10 would be so much more exciting!
