I work at an animal shelter, and we are approved as a donor base for the U of M Vet School. They have a program there where they take blood from canine donors and store it at their facility for future use - just like a human blood bank. When they are in need of healthy candidates they often come to local animal shelters and find dogs in need of homes. Then the volunteers in their program foster the dogs for about three years while the dog is acting as a blood donor. At their retirement, the volunteer officially adopts the dog into their family.
