These medications, I believe can and are helpful, if after every other avenue has been sought and tried. First you must make sure there are no medical reasons for your pets anxiety. Then if medical reasons are ruled out, you must try behavior modification without medicine. But, if you have done everything possible, then I say try them. They should never be the first line of defense, never. Behavior modification may then again be tried once they are on the medication, taking them off of it as soon as possible. You, as a human, wouldn't want to live your life full of anxiety would you? Why would we want our companions to? I don't believe it is fair to them, to rule out the medications as a last resort.
