Our dogs use Martingales too. But the friends that we walk with have had great success with the gentle leaders. They said that the most important thing is to carefully to measure the dog, get the right size and then the proper adjustment is "easy". Their dogs do walk well with them (and one is a little aggressive without it). So, it might be hard to get the exact fit if you're try to adapt it to different shelter dogs.
