Debbie- I also have done that. More than once. The first time I did that, I was only in high school. Our next door neighbor had bought a basset house puppy for his kids. Well shortly after that little puppy became a larger puppy, of course the kids lost interest and the parents put her outside with a dog house under the porch and some dishes. I feed, played and talked to this adorable loving little girl for 7 months. Never did I see those kids or the parents out there with that baby. I just couldn't take it any longer. My cousin who was in his early thirties had a bassett hound also, he lived in Colorado. So I called him and asked him if he would be interested in another one. Within 3 days he was at my house, dead of winter, talking and playing with her. We reached over the fence and picked her up. After a couple of hours of play, he decided that, yes, he wanted her. So I told him to just take her home. She lived to be 14 yrs old. Fat and sassy. And do you know the neighbors never asked or said a word about that sweetie dissappearing. I didn't feel bad, and never have about any of the others either. I have taken dogs from people who were going to turn them into shelters also. A doberman, who ended up living her life out with my sister, instead of getting killed at the shelter. A golden retriever mix that I took from a teenager sitting in the shelter parking lot crying, because her Dad told her if she came back home with the dog, he would kill it. I took her home, 3 weeks later I had her and 13 babies. I found homes for every last one of them. I have rescued cocker spaniels off of highways, cats off of busy streets, and a mastiff that was living in the woods. I will continue to rescue and save every last one of them I come across. Or that someone dumps on me. I have for 38 yrs and will do the same until I die. They deserve a life, just like we do. And I will do what I can, for whomever my lifes path crosses. Birds, ferrets, dogs, cats, bearded dragons, turtles, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamster, gerbils and yes snakes. (not fond of those). All have come through my house at one time or another. Read Less
