This is both a sad and uplifting article, as I have been following the situation with shelters and rescues closely, particularly equine rescues. With the demand for horses in Mexico and Canada slaughterhouses and the powerfuly stockyards who can afford to follow Federal transport guidelines, we are sending 312% more animals to their deaths in Mexico than prior to the closure of the US Plants.

I'm thrilled and inspired as the successes shared in the article and think that it would be a wonderful thing if a "consortium" was formed to function as a "think tank" and share creative ways to manage costs and increase fundraising. Another thought is to involve your local veterinarians in supporting an education initiative in your community to create awareness to a critically dire situation that many don't understand. Here, a smaller community, I am able to have free radio Public Service Announcements and our newspaper will print articles on the subject as they now consider this our entire community's responsibility to be aware of the problem and hopefully assist.
