Animals are a huge part of our society and many, many wonderful people get their pets from animal shelters. I think it's time that our governmental leaders step forward and help out with shelters. I think the best thing to do is go to a shelter and take your kids with you. You guys could look together for the best dog and see how that dog interacts with your children. I know where I live the shelter has a shelter cat that they test dogs behavior to cats on. Even if you go with the best breed for kids that particular dog may not like kids. I have an American Staffordshire Terrier which are ranked very high on behavior test and he lets kids pull on his ears, has never snapped at anyone or anything and lets my neighbors kids chase him with their quads. I think the shelter is the way to go (that's where I got my baby). Hope that helps. Read Less
