I don't think it's terrible to leave a dog in the car for a short period of time as long as the temperature is within a reasonable range and they are comfortable. I have an SUV with a Sun Roof. I put the seats down and the dog has the whole back of the car. SHe has her bed and a blankey, a collapsable water bowl which I leave for her and a bone to chew on. Personally, I feel it is ok to take them on the road with you, than to leave them home sitting on the couch. They love the car rides and watching people go by. I think it all depends on the circumstances. But I am shocked to hear that people are stealing other people's dogs. The lady who is missing her dog should check with breeders to see if someone tried to seel their dogs. Read Less

From what I read, I agree with the family - it sounds like the police officer used excessive force. Typically, when I call police about a stray animal they send an animal control officer, who may be better equipped and trained to deal with the situation. I hope the PD listens to the family and cooperate with them to establish guidelines to prevent another pet from being senselessly killed. Although they are animals, sometimes they are man (or woman's) best friend and are considered family. When my 21 year old cat died of old age, I was devastated. If that was my cat shot at 10 years of age, I would have been furious with that officer. My cat was my baby - he helped me through many difficult times. He never judged, only showed his love. Since I was not there, I cannot speak for the officer. I just hope he learns from this and sends a leeter of apology to the family. Read Less

First off, I wouldn't call us hate mongers, because some people are saying that the police should have handled it differently. I work with police officers on a day to day basis as an EMT and appreciate what they do. However, in this case, better judgement could have been used. A police officer is not licensed as a vetenarian. If he had questions about the cat being rabid or was suffering and had it in a snare, he could have had it seen by a vet. Finally, if it is true that your animal control center does not deal with cats, I would be seriously concerned. Read Less
I heard this story before and it is great. I think once the the whales had seen the dolphins, it was like seeing a familar face, and they were happy to have a guide home.
I agree, police are often criticized and deserve more respect for what they do. As a police officer, every scenario is different, and the solutions are not always in black and white. There are many grey areas and sometimes people need to make quick deci… Read More
I agree, police are often criticized and deserve more respect for what they do. As a police officer, every scenario is different, and the solutions are not always in black and white. There are many grey areas and sometimes people need to make quick decisions. I was not there and do not know all of the circumstances. But if I had learned, even if I had the best interest, that I killed someone's cat and not a feral cat, a letter of apology or condolensce. If animal control does not come oout for stray cats, then perhaps the police department, should set a policy for them to handle in future cases. Read Less
