Description: I've had Yaz since he was a hatchling--he will be ~12 y.o. this year! I've seen him through his teen years w/ his romantic "partners" (a couch comforter, a plush toy frog in a Santa hat) and he's the least aggro of my males, I've never been bitten! He's a perfect gentleman w/ my girl ig, Gnarla, although he does enjoy courting from time to time. She, however, can defend herself perfectly well! Yaz is very patient and has endured posing in costumes for over 10 yrs! Very sweet boy.

Springtime, when a young(ish) iguana's thoughts tu…

Yesterday I was feeling under the weather, so I left work early. However, it was the first lovely sunny day we've had in weeks, so I made sure to get Yaz outside for some rays. We both sat basking on the back patio, but since male iguanas tend to go into "season" twice a year (generally between April-June and October-December) they must be watched constantly. Oh, do I miss Gnarla! It was so much easier (believe it or not) sunning 2 iggies together. In addition, they … read more

Luuucy is Hooooome!

I called up Dave last night who was very happy to report that his best girl made it through her 2 hr (!) surgery and is resting comfortably in his arms at home. He was exhausted--from the trips back 'n' forth to Tufts, from trying to modify her entire ROOM to minimize her desire to climb, from all the WORRY & ANXIETY--so we didn't chat long, but I just wanted to know she was OK. Medically, he read the report which detailed her enlarged right ovary (which was removed and biops… read more

Brief Lucy Update

It's been a long day, I just got home from work about an hour ago. We were short handed today at work, and wound up doing about 30 spay-neuter surgeries. And, though I think cell phones are the scourge of humanity, I borrowed my roomie's, so that Dave could contact me about Lucy. He called at an absolutely perfect time--I had just punched out for lunch. "Great timing," I told him. "I just got out of surgery." "SO DID LUCY!" &quo… read more

Gnarla's Long-Distance Sister

I just got off the phone w/ a very good friend of mine back east in MA. For the past wk or so, his adult iguana Lucy has been having odd physical symptoms and his herp vet (and I use the term extremely loosely) kept putting him off, saying they couldn't get Lucy in to be seen til June 9th. I have never heard of any vet worth his/her salt refusing to take an ill animal ASAP, especially one who's a "regular" patient, especially one who's a reptile, since reptiles can go downhill so rapi… read more

Life with Yaz

Well, it's been 25 days now since Gnarla's passing. It took me awhile, but I can now look at pics of her and smile, knowing we had a good time together for 4 years and that she would not have had that lifespan in the house where she was found. She had a spacious cage, an ig boyfriend/buddy/protector in Yaz, homegrown greens in the summertime, windows to look out of, cat trees to climb...I miss her so much, but now she is somewhere, no doubt running & climbing to her heart's content, boasti… read more
