I leave my carriers out all the time too. Whenever I pick them up to put in another room, the kitties are right there following me, so they can jump in and check out their new location.
When I bought this carrier I also bought a rectangular convoluted foam pad, as I felt the carrier didn't have enough of its own. Of course, Gabe has plenty of 'padding' already :)

PS: I have one of these carriers and leave it out all the time. Gabe is such a big boy and doesn't fit comfortably in regular carriers :)
