Sawyer "Squishy"
Photo 250 of 259
Sawyer is a one year old cat that started out living in a barn with little human contact. He lived with lots of other cats, and he was feral. The local vet had to capture him to get him in her shelter.
The staff named him Squishy, because once he got used to human attention, grew to want it and "squish" himself against them, snuggling with them. Squishy wouldn't show the behaviors that earned his name in front of strangers, so he didn't get adopted, and stayed at the shelter.
I came to the vet's office for my dog and I saw a sign about the adoptable cats. I met with the kitties in there, and there was Sawyer (Squishy). He didn't want anything to do with me, and I felt sad. The vet told me to take him home and give him three days, and if it didn't work, she'd take him back. I listened to her and brought him home.
That very night, he decided my apartment was his home, and he snuggled with me and purred as loud as a freight train. Since then, he has made good friends with my dog, and as I'm typing this, he is licking my fingers and resting on my hands.
There are so many wonderful animals that need to be given a chance and a loving home. Sawyer is the sweetest cat I've ever had, and I never would have known him if I hadn't listened to the vet and adopted him. I am truly thankful to not only know him, but have him in my life every day.

Thank you for your nice comments. Sawyer is in his basket by the window of our apartment, he is the resident "watch-kitty". I never would have known his vibrant personality if I didn't trust the vet and adopt him. Sawyer is so patient and sweet, just what I need. A big thanks to everyone for the really nice comments!

That is a wonderful story! I am so glad you trusted your vet. She must have known it would be a good match right from the start. I think sometimes it takes a little longer to find the right home for some animals, and this is a great reason to give them a chance. Give Squishy a big hug from me and Kashmir!

I wholeheartedly agree. The vet was very insightful, and she actually GAVE him to me because she really thought he was going to a good home. The vet had me write a testimony for their office to prove to people that the cats cannot be judged for how they act in an unfamiliar place. Thank you for the sweet comment!

Thank you so much for your nice comment. All the cats I've ever had (except one) came from shelters. I don't know if people always understand what these animals have gone through when they go to pick them out and wonder why they are shy to be near them. I'd be shy too if I were stuffed in a box or crate and shipped from place to place! Sawyer is a sweet, wonderful kitty that hopefully fulfills the moral "Don't judge a book by its cover".
