They like their feet in shade and the upper growth in the sun. I have some that don't get a lot of sun and still do well. If the root area is in the sun, they won't do well. You can get around that by planting low plants all around the roots to keep them covered and mulching heavily. I have them all over my yard in all different conditions. The only one that didn't do well was in a direct west, full sun position. I think it was too hot.

It is beautiful. I would love to have one climb my lamp post. Do they need lots of sun?
