Dakota...angel pup
Photo 67 of 131
I have to say that generally I have liked animals more than people. Never more so than after I became a police officer 13 years ago.
I used to have three labs, all female. And they were my world. And then age caught up with them. I thought I would die after I lost them. I myself was sick, very sick, for a long time, losing twin children in the process. So I took a leave of absence from the department hoping to find a reason to get up in the morning again.
I never thought I would find it, in the liquid eyes of a puppy.
I heard about a rescued tripod pup that was slated for euthanasia at the pound. It's leg had been crushed so badly that it had to be removed above the shoulder line, leaving a hole, it had been done intentionally to this little baby puppy, not an accident. The pup wouldn't respond to humans at all.
I went over there after hearing his story, determined to make a difference in his little life. I sat to the side of his little crate for two hours, whispering my story to him, and telling him how lonely and sad I was. I cried, telling him of my dogs, and how it was so wrong to come home and not have a warm pup there to greet me. At the end of those two hours that little pup crawled out of the crate and proceeded to climb into my lap. He then just looked at me, with huge brown eyes, as if to say, "It's okay, we'll take care of eachother now."
I sobbed for a while longer at his trust and then took him home. I packed my things and my Dakota (his new name) and I moved home.
He has continued to be my strength as I am his when he is tired. I come home after looking death in the face all the time at work, and he is warm and happy to see me. We are a team, even with the addition now of a husband and his sister, Samboozle, he and I are a team.
Loving...unconditional love...it's the only place short of God to find it, in the liquid eyes of my dog. Amazing isn't it?

I am sitting here with tears in my eyes thinking of the love that was meant to be found for the two of you. My dad was an Atlanta Policeman, and I know that animals unwavering love got him through some tough times that he couldn't share with family. I am so sorry that anyone ever hurt your dog, and I am gladdened by the fact that he now has a loving home where he will always be safe. Give Dakota a big hug from me. I rescue horses, and I know that feeling of a mixture of fear, sympathy, empathy, even hopelessness, and the need to break through the barriers, and bring a little love back to those liquid eyes. I am so happy that you found a husband and another good dog to love.

Thank you...Atlanta PD huh? Not that far from me! He's an angel boy. And now, with the addition of my newly adopted son, Dakota has a little boy to torture him and play with him too! LOL

WOW, thank you. He's a wonderful boy. He's not real fond of his sister all the time, and I just adopted a little boy and he's jealous of that too. But he is getting used to it, and likes to sleep with my son. But only when he's already asleep and doesn't know Dakota is there! LOL

You are going to have to come up here for Halloween and dress him up as your pirate side-kick! He could have a peg leg and everything! Thank you Uncle Jeff!!! Give Eileen a kiss for me.

I am so happy to shared yours and Dakota's story with us. It is moving and inspirational. The two of you were intended to be together to help you both be strong. It saddens me to hear of such horror stories of abuse on such a beautiful creature. I am happy your found each other.
