Zen Canines: Doga Brings Harmony to Pets

Browse News

NEW YORK -- When it comes to your dog interrupting your Yoga routine, if you can’t beat ’em join ’em -- or have them join you.

Doga, or Yoga for dogs, is a new fad that has been offered for months at Bideawee, an animal welfare organization in New York City.

"I do see the benefit of yoga, and I am one that believes in the bonding experience with an animal and the wonderful things that animals can do for people,” said Lina Haimelin of Bideawee.

"You do a lot of traditional yoga moves,” said doga student Grace Yang. “You get a good workout and the dogs enjoy it too.”

Doga is gaining popularity in major cities, but it is stretching to smaller towns too. Among the states offering classes are Washington, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Kansas and Florida.

So who invented doga? Kari Harendorf is a doga pioneer. That is, together with her dog, Charlie. Having practiced it for seven years, Harendorf is now a doga instructor at Bideawee.

For her and Charlie, necessity was the mother of this invention, Harendorf says.

"The idea started when I was doing my teacher training to become a certified yoga teacher,” she said. “I had to practice at home.

“When I would roll out my mat, he would lie on it and would put his paw on my hand and I had to step over him and step back. I didn't want move him."

The doga experience is mutually beneficial for dogs and people, Harendorf says.

"Dogs receive benefits through the poses that aid their circulation their digestion,” she said. “There is a lot of massage techniques. It is very relaxing for them.

“And for the humans, the simple act of petting a dog lowers your blood pressure. It is time with your dog, it's a bonding experience."

Aside from being life-enriching, doga can also be life-saving.

"I had several students that found lipomas or tumors on their dogs just from the doga class,” Harendorf said. “Thankfully, they were caught in time or turned out to be nothing.”

Canine doga participants come in all sizes, just like people.

"We have a majority of small to medium size dogs, but we are starting to get more large dogs,” Haimelin said. "We've been attracting younger people like in the lower 20s and middle-aged people as well. It is a great combination."

"Certain breeds, certainly are prone to more injuries,” Harendorf said. Like I always say, if there is a dachshunds in class then there are certain lifts you don't want to do because their backs are more fragile than others."

The classes are beneficial to both Yang and her dog.

"It's social for her,” she said. “She gets a little massage and we get to spend time together. This is just one more venue that we can hang out. It's great quality time to spend with your dog, it's a great bonding experience."

If you are skeptical, or just plain scared of trying doga, participants here encourage you to be more dogged.

"Just do it,” Harendorf urged. “Don't be scared. You can do it at home with your own dog. You don't have to necessarily come to class."

"Just give it a shot, agreed Yang. “It is really like most yoga classes, it is non-judgmental."

Most dogs respond well to doga, Harendorf says, though she suggests slowly introducing it to dogs with anxiety or those that came from abusive situations.

As unique as the classes are, in some ways they are no different than most yoga sessions.

"At the very end, you kind of just lay on the floor together and everyone was just so relaxed,” Haimelin said.

Interesting concept. Don't know that it would work with all dogs but it is definately a time for your dog to have your undivided attention. You also get the benefits of pet therapy.

I've never heard of this. I do not do yoga myself and I can't imagine doga working for my pup, but it would be interesting to try.

Don't know much about yoga and really don't care to learn so I doubt I will be trying this with my dog. But if it's something you and your dog enjoy, go for it.

I've never heard of it before either. But I do use "zen down" with one of my over stimulated foster dogs. Works really well to get him to chill out :-)

I do Yoga @ home & both my dogs interrupt my calm zen like state by licking my face & walking on me. They think its fun when I get down on the carpet or lay on my ball. They think its play time. I don't see doga working for my 2 but if it works for people & there dogs, I am all for it. It will be a long time before our small town ever hears of this. It is a good bonding option for big city pet owners who may not have alot of space to run or work out w/ their pets to have a class they can take together & look forward to. This story is kind of out there for me but thanks for the info Zootoo.

How cute! I like the idea of working out with your pet. My dog would not be good in this class- he'd try to go after another dog in a not so friendly manner!! But if I had a dog that liked other dogs- I'd do this yoga class for sure.

Sounds interesting, I have heard of dog massages to help relax dogs, so why not a combined human/canine yoga class.

I think its a great idea. Nothing calms a person as much as loving on a pet. Its proven in therapy dogs. I have a border collie that loves to cuddle and just be loved on. She thinks she is a lap dog! It would be beneficial for both the owner and the pet. Would love to know where one could purchase a dvd on this? With my cats I massage and do something similar to this with them all the time.

I really like this idea. I don't do yoga but my dogs are very calm and love to be babied so I think they'd really enjoy this. I'm sure they'd really love being stretched, massaged and the center of attention. My oldest little dog (Lola) has a heart murmur now so being able to lower her blood pressure while spending special time with her sounds perfect.

I don't really understand the part of the dog in the yoga... Do the owners like lift them in the poses, or have them lay down and do yoga over them? I don't get it but if it's helping and people are willing to do it, it doesn't bother me.

Very interesting....but I like to walk my dog. She's a Jack Russell Terrier, so she high energy--this would never work for us! We have our cuddle time at night, so that's when we relax!

My lab would be into this, but not my other two. They are more of a rip and run kind of dogs. They could not sit still long enough to get the mat out.

As long as your not forcing the dog to do it, I am all for anything that is beneficial for an animal. How great is it that people can spend the time bonding with their dogs and getting the benefits of yoga at the same time?

Great idea they may not have a long attention span but it would be fun and interesting to do with your pet. You just might even get more exercise just trying to get your four legged friend to do what you want them to do.

Don't see my dogs sitting still for this one, especially not in a roomfull of other dogs. They'd be busy running around sniffing butts.

Yeah mine too! You would have to have a get to know everyone 1st class for butt sniffing & get it out of the way. Maybe, just maybe than my two would stay by my side. Actually doing the doga would be another thing-NOT. They won't even let me do Yoga @ home w/ out giving me suprise mouth kisses & licks. Kind of ruins the relaxation & holding a pose zen! It's fun trying I guess:)

I would love to try this out with my dogs! It's so true that they like to get in the way when I'm doing yoga. I think this is a fantastic idea and I hope that a class will be starting near me soon or how about a dvd for doing this at home??!!

Sounds interesting...I've never done yoga, but it's nice to know that there are options like this one out there. Although, my cousin does yoga in her home with her pets, I she figured why go to another place when she can enjoy yoga with her pets in the comfort of her home. It's unique, but doesn't sound like a lucrative business, although, I've been wrong before! LOL

Sounds interesting. I love Yoga but haven't done any in a few years. My pups ripped up my yoga mat one time, so I'm not sure how into this they would be. But it would probably be great for preventing arthritis and other ailments in dogs.

Hey I am totally for "to each his own", and if it indeed works and some people love it, then more power to them. There is no way anyone can put down any positive things being done for animals!!! :)

I think having a dog that large to stretch around might be helpful. There is not much of a challenge with a toy sized one.
