Sword-Wielding Dog Killer Gets 1 Year in Jail

Browse News

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- A man who slashed his dog to death with a sword was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday.

Robert Allen Young Jr. pleaded guilty to killing his 50-pound male Pit Bull in his Chesapeake, Va., home on Sept. 7. At his Tuesday sentencing, Young, the 46-year-old husband and father of two, offered no defense of the abuse.

Authorities were alerted to the crime when neighbors reported seeing Young "instigating his dog with some type of sword" outside his home at Chesapeake Mobile Home Park, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Neighbors then watched as Young took the dog into the home and re-emerged 15 minutes later with the Pit's slashed body, which he deposited into a trash bin.

Young was arrested that evening and charged with animal cruelty, as well as failure to vaccinate his dog for rabies and register it with the city of Chesapeake.

He was reported to have been very intoxicated at the time of the crime, which Young attributed to self defense. Deputy Public Defender A. Robinson Winn said his client was "highly intoxicated" at the time of the incident.

While the dog had no documented history of aggression, Winn said that the Pit Bull had lunged at Young before, as well as at other animals.

"He said the dog had been aggressive in the past and on this date in question and he killed the dog," Winn said.

Young received a five-year sentence with four years suspended, contingent on indeterminate supervised probation. In Virginia, animal cruelty is considered a felony, generally warranting no more than a one year prison sentence.

The unusual weapon of choice in this gruesome animal cruelty case was reminiscent of a case in mid-July, when a Pennsylvania man killed his wife's American bulldog mix with a 30-inch Samurai-style sword, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

In that case, the police of Ridlely Township confiscated 20 daggers and 10 swords from the accused's home.

One year is way to short for this crime. It is sickening that he will only be getting a one year sentence.

True, one year isn't enough, but I am happy that he got at least that much. So many people who harm animals get nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

What a sick man! One year is not enough. I hope he’s never allowed to have a pet again and if his children are young, never allowed to be with them either.

One year for a crime like that is nothing, he deserved much more. I would hope that part of his sentence included a prohibition against him ever owning animals again.

As the owner of 2 rescue pit bulls, both from abuse cases, the aggression excuse doesn't fly. These dogs are nt aggresive if they are treated with love and compassion. They will even learn to trust again when treated right. Mine go to horse shows, rescue events, play time with other dogs all with no issues. There are no bad dogs, just people who turn them that way. Remember, Pit bulls are just dogs: Four legs, two eyes, one heart!

The owner pled self-defense? If the dog lunged at its owner, it was probably because the dog had been mistreated in the past. Stories like this always make me angry. Why do people feel it's okay to abuse and harm animals?

I have wondered the very same thing. anyone who has looked into the eyes of a dog would not be able to do anything to hurt them IF they had a heart and feelings of compassion and this guy has neither , in my opinion

It has been proven in most cases, that at some point people that go one to kill other people, torture, abuse, and kill animals at first. If someone can take the life of an animal, especially in such a cruel way with a sword, then what makes me think he wont come out of prison in a year with even more hate in him, what will he do then. I seriously disagree that 1 year will teach him his lesson. I think that we need stricter laws, because one year is a joke for what he has done.

No dog should be thrown away with the garbage. If his dog had shown previous signs of aggression he should have dealt with it before it came down to killing the dog in self defense (if that is what happened).

A story and happening that makes my skin crawl and I cringe. How horrible. But this poor dog is finally at peace. Just imagine what his life must have been like with this abuser turned killer. A sociopath for sure. I hope his family...children were looked into. Abuse animals and most likely, abuse family.

The dog showed aggression in the past!? Of course. This poor baby must have been terribly abused on an ongoing basis. A year is a long time for prison, at this point, for horrendous acts...murder...such as this. Good he got a year. With time, jail time WILL be longer.

I like your answer cooper46 that is my feeling exactly. Who cares about jail he basically gets to sit around for a year and eat regular meals and exercise for free. All because he killed his dog so stupid. His punishment should be harsher somehow.
